A red covered bridge spanning a creek in Madison County, white fence rolling out into the corn, an Iowa highway disappearing into late October, the kind of postcard the state earned by living it. Singles past 50 here are mostly steady people who've stayed put, with a few who came back for the kids' sake and didn't leave. However you arrived at this point, the pace doesn't ask you to explain yourself.

For a first walk, Des Moines members favor Gray's Lake or coffee in the East Village. The Pappajohn Sculpture Park works for a slower afternoon. Cedar Rapids regulars meet in the NewBo District; Iowa City couples often start on the Pedestrian Mall or in City Park. Davenport's LeClaire Park along the Mississippi is good in summer. The Bridges of Madison County are still a fine Saturday drive together.
